Q&A with fashion stylist for Miami Heat stars LeBron James and Chris Bosh - Sun-Sentinel

June 13, 2012|By Rod Stafford Hagwood, Staff Writer

"We always have that infamous walk from the bus to our locker room and that’s when a lot of camera time is involved. People watch that a lot. They always show that on TV. You always want to make sure you have your clothes right and make sure you’re looking good, and for me it helps with my game, because it makes me more serious, it puts me in the mood to go out there and do my job."

Chris Bosh in New York Magazine

Have you noticed that when it comes to the Miami Heat, the big ballers don't just battle on basketball court?

There are some serious fashion wars being waged as well.

And when it comes to two of the most stylish stars of the NBA - LeBron James and Chris Bosh - they have a secret weapon: fashion stylist Rachel Johnson (whose long list of A-list name clients also includes Amar'e Stoudemire, Serena Williams, Jamie Fox and Keyshia Cole).

Johnson works with both NBA superstars helping them define their sartorial image. It's not like she has to force them, both men enthusiastically embrace their fashion icon status. King James - who owns the Unknwn boutique in Aventura Mall - was even on the cover of Vogue in 2008...with uber model Gisele Bundchen no less.

And we are sure that Posh Bosh wasn't being literal when he said in Esquire magazine: "You might want to cut off some shorts and wear them with some boots and a cool shirt. That's fashion, because it's what you want to do. People can laugh at it, but you have to be like, 'This is cool. I don't know what you're talking about.' Next thing you know, people will be saying, That is kind of cool, man."

After all during last year's lockout Bosh Man hit New York fashion week, sitting front row at both Cynthia Rowley and Lacoste catwalk capers.

So we caught up with Johnson for a quick Q&A on her high fashion hoopster clientele:

How long have you been styling for both Chris Bosh and LeBron James?

"LeBron seven years, Bosh two and a half years

How much input do the players have on what you choose and pull from stores?

"Tons. Both LeBron and Chris each have a specific vision for the way they express their individual style."

Do either LeBron James or Chris Bosh go for any specific look or are they more hand’s off and defer to your judgment?

"LJ is has timeless, classic sartorial tendencies. Bosh is completely, totally dedicated to  presenting himself as a gentleman at all times and will more likely than not be seen in perfectly tailored suiting."

Do either Chris Bosh or LeBron James talk to you about what they’ve seen other players wearing?

"Yes. Truly stylish gentlemen always notice what other gentlemen are wearing."

Are there any favorite stores in South Florida that LeBron James or Chris Bosh prefer?

"The Webster on South Beach."

What are the biggest trends you see for NBA players right now, aside from those “geek chic” lens-less glasses?

"Besides the glasses that are a phenomenon of their own, I see perfectly tailored clothing, expressions of bold colors and an understanding that style creates brands."
